It is a simple, bony essence (it contains a lot of silicon), whose properties have been known in traditional medicine for many centuries: it has astringent, emollient, decongestant, antiphlogistic, antiseptic and depurative virtues.
It's also a food plant: used fresh in salads, as a pesto, cooked in soups... Its uses are manifold.
